Sofia the First Wiki

"Substitute Cedric" is the forty-fifth episode of the Disney Jr. animated series, Sofia the First. It premiered on February 20, 2015, and is the twenty-first episode of the second season.

Overview[]

Cedric steps in as a substitute teacher for Sofia's sorcery class and helps students at Royal Prep protect their school from a group of visiting pranksters out to wreak havoc.

Plot[]

At Royal Prep, the students are learning the bouncing spell in sorcery class. Sofia learns it without any trouble, but everyone else just can't seem to get it down. Flora announces that she, Fauna, and Merryweather are going to the United Fairy Teachers Meeting tomorrow. But Fauna forgot about this and didn't find a substitute teacher for sorcery class. Sofia decides to ask Cedric to be the substitute, as he's really good at magic, which Fauna likes.

At first, Cedric doesn't want to, as he's busy brewing an important potion while also stating that no one besides Sofia thinks he is a great sorcerer. This is why Cedric is brewing a potion that will make his face appear in every mirror in the kingdom so all will behold his true greatness. Since Cedric is out of vex vine, Sofia tells him about the extra vex vine at Royal Prep's greenhouse, and Cedric decides to pick some after class tomorrow. After Sofia leaves, Cedric tells Wormwood about Sofia agreeing to teach her class.

The next day, at Royal Prep, Cedric welcomes the class and tells them to be quiet for a whole hour. He decides to go to the greenhouse, but when Sofia reminds her about it, Cedric resumes the bouncing spell lesson. Cedric masters the spell, but the others still can't get it right, unlike Sofia. Vivian tells Sofia that she's not good at magic. Cedric decides to leave the class, but after Sofia tells him, he decides to show them the spell one more time.

Meanwhile, three students known as Elliot, Amy, and Kurt show up. They spot Minimus and cast a cloud raining confetti on the horses, alerting Sir Gillium and his students, marking their first prank as part of Hexley Hall Prank Day. As the horses fly away, the pranksters decide to do more pranks.

As the students struggle with the bouncing spell, Elliot, Amy, and Kurt enter the school and make them float and spin in a circle. Cedric knows that the pranksters are from Hexley Hall, his old sorcery school. James and Amber tell Sofia that every year the students from Hexley Hall play magical pranks at Royal Prep that leave the school in disarray for months (like turning the school upside-down) and the pranks are far from harmless. Elliot, Amy, and Kurt plan to fill the school with bubbles so that it will float while everyone goes for lunch at noon, which they describe will be the best prank ever.

Before the pranksters leave, Amy spins the students faster. She, Elliot, and Amy give paintings mustaches. Amy also makes the hallway slippery. Cedric brings the students back to the ground, and Sofia tells him to stop the pranksters. With supporting ideas from James, Amber, and Sofia, who remind him that he's in charge and failing to handle three kids will make him look like an idiot, Cedric decides to help.

After sliding across the hall, Cedric spots kids bouncing in the gymnasium via the trampoline floor trick, caused by Elliot, Amy, and Kurt. Cedric makes the spell disappear, but the pranksters undo the trick. Cedric tries to stop the pranksters with a sticking spell, but Amy catches the spell. Kurt spins Cedric around and Amy, along with Elliot and Kurt, uses the sticking spell to stick Cedric in a chair. They continue pranking Cedric before mocking him and leaving.

Sofia and the others decide to help but slide across the hallway. They head to Cedric, who tells them about what the pranksters did to them. He teaches them the disappearing spell which would save the school. They all try it on the moustaches on the paintings, but everyone fails, with James creating a big moustache on Amber.

Meanwhile, the pranksters plan for everyone from Hexley Hall to come for lunch and see Royal Prep floating away. As they float to the ground, they prank Sir Gillium by making him float and sticking him inside of the school's tower. Vivian isn't even trying the disappearing spell because she has no confidence. She tries it anyway, but concludes that she is terrible at magic. Through a song, Cedric tells the children that when he first got to Hexley Hall, he couldn't do the disappearing spell or most of the other spells. Then, his teacher taught him the sorcerer's secret and the key to casting successful magic: keep trying and to never give up until he finally gets the spells right. Sofia, Amber, and James make three mustaches disappear. As for the trampolines, the students make most of them disappear, but a nervous Vivian makes them reappear. Cedric reminds the students about the sorcerer's secret again, and the students make the trampolines disappear.

Just then, noon arrives, and with Sir Gillium stuck to the tower, the Hexley Hall trio casts the spell for their ultimate prank: filling Royal Prep with bubbles to make the school float away. Sofia and her friends head outside and start to make some bubbles disappear. Vivian's nervousness makes the bubbles bigger. Afterwards, Kurt makes the wands float in the air and Amy traps everyone except for Vivian in a bubble storm. As the trio creates more bubbles while heading inside the school, Vivian tries the disappearing spell on the storm, and gets it right after never giving up, saving her friends.

While Vivian is praised, Cedric gets forced outside, and Vivian tells him about what she did. Since Elliot, Amy, and Kurt are continuing to make more bubbles, Cedric has an idea about using the bouncing spell to bounce them back to Hexley Hall, which Sofia accepts. Since it'll take everyone to stop the pranksters, Sofia will teach the students the spell and show them how to flick their wands just right. Cedric tells Sofia to keep trying.

Meanwhile, Elliot, Amy, and Kurt fill the school with bubbles and start to make it float away. Sofia uses the bouncing spell on Kurt, but the other students fail to do so. After Sofia motivates them, they get the spell right, making the trio bounce. Then, they save the school with a disappearing spell, making the bubbles disappear. As the students continue to make Elliot, Amy, and Kurt bounce, the pranksters promise to leave and never prank them again.

As Sofia and her friends celebrate, the fairies return. Cedric tells them what happened. Fauna then frees Sir Gillum and Cedric from the sticky spell. Fauna assures everyone that the Headmaster of Hexley Hall will hear about it and punish the trio accordingly. Cedric tells the fairies that the students drove the trio away, as he taught them all the spells and the sorcerer's secret. The fairies praise Cedric for being the greatest sorcerer. As Vivian makes one more bubble disappear, Cedric then goes to the greenhouse to get his vex vine, and decides to teach the students a few more spells before doing so.

Trivia[]

  • Viewership: This episode was watched by 1.938 million viewers on its premiere.[1]
  • This episode and the next episode's premiere time was moved from 9:00am to 9:30am (the show's original timeslot), due to Miles from Tomorrowland (which premiered two weeks earlier) taking the 9:00am slot on Fridays at the time.
  • This is the fourth episode where Cedric sings, as well as his second solo song. His first solo was Cedric the Great in "Cedric's Apprentice", he sang the duet I'll Get My/That Amulet with Sofia in "The Amulet of Avalor", and was featured in the song Mystic Meadows in the episode of the same name.
  • This episode shows flashbacks when Cedric was a little boy. This is also the fifth episode that features a flashback of characters, the others were "Let the Good Times Troll", "Baileywick's Day Off", "Mom's the Word", and "The Princess Stays in the Picture".
    • He has made references to his flashback in this episode in the lyrics of "Cedric the Great" in the episode "Cedric's Apprentice".
    • This is the third time these flashbacks are happening during the episode's song. The first two were in "Mom's the Word" and "The Princess Stays in the Picture".
  • This is the second time Desmond and Vivian both play an active role together. The first was "Enchanted Science Fair".
  • The painting James removes the mustaches from is a copy of a famous British painting entitled "The Two Princes in the Tower" depicting Richard and Edward V of England. The painting was originally done in 1483.
  • Two paintings of Aunt Tilly and the Old Man from "The Princess Stays in the Picture" can be seen in the school hallways.
  • This is the third episode which trouble triggers in Royal Prep. The first was "Make Way for Miss Nettle", then the second was "Scrambled Pets".
  • This is Cedric's first visit to Royal Prep.
  • The Three Good Fairies meet Cedric for the second time, the first was "Tea for Too Many".
  • Cedric and Sir Gillium meet for the first time, but don't speak to each other. However, they are both voiced by Jess Harnell.
  • This is the second time some of Royal Prep Students wear their Gym uniforms, the first time was in "Scrambled Pets".
  • Other Princesses are seen trying to learn how to horseback ride just like Sofia.
  • Sir Gillium is seen teaching other Princesses how to Horseback ride.
  • Minimus makes a cameo in this episode.
  • When filling the school with bubbles, the three Pranksters chant, "Bubble, bubble, let's make trouble! Fill this school on the double!" a nod to Macbeth.
  • In retrospect, the bubble prank was in fact extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening as the three pranksters filled the school whilst there were still students inside it. Had the bubbles popped or been unable to hold the school up for long, the building crashing to the ground could have caused it to collapse and injure or even kill those inside it. This goes for their many other pranks, such as the bubble storm. Had it gained speed and power, Sofia, Amber, Desmond, and James could have very much been killed had Vivian not made the storm disappear.
  • Due to the Headmaster of Hexley Hall being corrupt as shown in the "Hexley Hall" episode, this could possibly be the reason why Prank Day has been allowed to go on for so long.
  • Although this episode premiered in 2015, it was produced in 2014 according to the credits.
  • Moral: Commitment and confidence are the paths to success.

Goofs[]

  • Sir Gillium intervenes with the Pranksters, but they put him in the clock tower. In the scene where the song is set in, Sir Gillium is instead in a room where the floor becomes a trampoline. After Miss Fauna and Miss Flora arrived, Sir Gillium calls help in the clock tower. (Although, this goof is overlooked due to Sir Gillium having some likeness to Professor Popov, and will take a sharp eye to spot the differences... it's a mistake none-the-less.)
  • Princess Maya is joining the sorcery class and the flying derby training at the same time.
  • King Roland II wasn't in this episode, but he was credited in the end.
