"Let the Good Times Troll" is the third episode of the Disney Jr. animated series, Sofia the First. It premiered on January 25, 2013.

Overview[]

Sofia befriends a family of trolls and teaches her father about not jumping to conclusions before knowing the facts.

Plot[]

Princess Sofia, Prince James, and Princess Amber are flying kites in the backyard, when Sofia accidentally trips and loses hers. Amber tells her that the Castle Trolls live down where her kite landed and they're supposed to be dangerous. Sofia goes down anyway to get her kite back, but she gets scared when she sees a troll peeking out and ran away in fright, leaving her kite behind. That night, Sofia mentioned the trolls at dinner, prompting Roland and James to tell the story of King Gideon and the trolls. Many years ago, Roland's grandfather, King Gideon, was the ruler of Enchancia. One night, he heard a strange, loud thumping noise outside the castle. When he went to investigate, he discovered a group of trolls banging their clubs in the courtyard. Shocked, the King summoned the guards, who chased the trolls all the way back to their cave. No one has seen the trolls outside their cave ever since. After the story, Roland explains that King Gideon made a rule that the trolls must stay in their cave and the castle's inhabitants must stay close to the castle. "It's safer that way for everyone," he added.

The following morning, Sofia finds that her fixed kite has been returned to her. Realizing the troll she saw yesterday must've fixed it, she decides to go thank him. While Sofia is looking around in the cave, the troll pulls her off the dangerous bridge she's crossing. He then introduces himself as Gnarly and brings her to the trolls' grotto. There, a giant ceiling of crystals looks like a starry night sky, reflecting the trolls' love of looking at the stars. A little troll named Teeny then appears and meets Sofia.

When Sofia asked why the trolls stayed in the cave looking at fake stars when they could go outside to see real ones, Teeny replied, "We're not allowed." Gnarlie then told the story from the trolls' point of view. Long ago, their great-grand-trolls went outside to look at the stars one night. They were happily banging their clubs to make music when King Gideon came out and saw them. Thinking they were making trouble, he sent his guards to chase them all the way back to their cave. Due to a new rule by King Gideon, the trolls are now forbidden from ever leaving their cave again.

Through a song, Sofia discovered that the trolls bang their clubs to make music when they feel happy, which confirms that King Gideon's story was a misunderstanding. He had jumped to the conclusions without getting all the facts first.

Sofia later told James about her meeting with the trolls and what actually happened between them and King Gideon. The two decided to come up with a plan to show everyone there was no reason to be scared of the trolls. When they saw a troupe of acrobats who would be performing for their family after dinner, Sofia came up with an idea: the trolls could perform for the King and Queen.

Sofia tells Gnarlie that she and James eill sneak the trolls in while everyone was having dessert. They'll hide until the acrobats finished their performance. Although Gnarlie was unsure, he still agreed to go along with the plan.

After dinner, Sofia and James claim that they're full and don't want dessert and run off. The trolls are successfully brought in the throne room and hidden behind the curtains, where they will wait until Sofia announces there's one more surprise. Once the acrobats are finished, Sofia makes the announcement and, after James pulls back the curtain, the trolls reveal themselves and begin to make their music, causing the curtain to accidentally shove Amber, who (just like Sofia and James) thinks that the trolls are fun. Thinking they're attacking, Roland orders his guards to seize them, despite Sofia's pleas to leave them alone. The trolls manage to escape, and after that, Sofia is taken to her father, who angrily asks "How did trolls get into the castle?" Sofia says that she brought them in. Roland tells her they will talk about this later and has his wife escort the kids to their rooms. He then tells Baileywick that the trolls stay below and royalty says above. Baileywick replies that he will place a guard outside the trolls' cave so this never happens again. In Sofia's room, Miranda comforts Sofia, who tells her that she was only trying to help everyone get along. Miranda then tells Sofia that one of the things she likes about her is seeing the best in everyone, then she kisses Sofia goodnight and leaves the room. Knowing she may never see her new friends again, Sofia goes to the cave with her animal friends to say goodbye to Gnarlie and apologize to him since this will be her only chance to do so. In her haste to get to the cave, Sofia fails to notice she has been spotted by Roland, who goes after her.

Roland catches up to Sofia as she once again crosses the unsafe bridge, but it breaks under both of them who plummet into a deep pit. Down in the hole, Sofia explains to her father that the conflict between the trolls and King Gideon was all a misunderstanding. She points out that Gideon had jumped to conclusions without getting the facts first, just like Roland did. Suddenly, Gnarlie and the other trolls arrive and pull Sofia and Roland out of the pit.

Afterward, Roland apologizes to the trolls for how they've been treated. He then invites them back to the castle and decides to make a royal proclamation to make it up to them. Teeny asks what that is, and Roland explains it's a big announcement only kings get to make. Sofia then tells Roland where he should make the proclamation. When they return to the castle, Roland announces to everyone in the observatory that the trolls will be treated as friends and are free to come up to see the stars whenever they like. The observatory's ceiling opens to reveal the stars, exciting the trolls. Miranda is proud of Sofia and makes her promise never to go into a dark cave alone again which she does. Gnarlie thanks Sofia for her help, and the trolls celebrate.
