Gnarlie is a Troll that lived in the Trolls’ Grotto beneath Enchancia Castle for most of his life due to a misunderstanding between the trolls and King Gideon, the grandfather of King Roland II.

Physical Appearance[]

Gnarlie has green skin, with darker green fur on his arms, chest, and legs, and darker green hair in a ponytail tied with twine. He wears an orange vest and brown pants with a rope belt. His eyes are orange, and like most trolls (the exception being Chief Gnuckles) he has yellow scleras.

History[]

Gnarly made his debut appearance in "Let the Good Times Troll." After Princess Sofia lost her kite near the Trolls' Grotto, he repaired and returned it to her. When Sofia came to thank him and accidentally stepped onto an unsturdy bridge, he pulled her to safety. He then introduced her to the rest of the trolls and helped her realize that the trolls had not attacked the castle three generations prior, as the royal family believed. Instead, they had been making music with their clubs, a sign of their happiness.

Sofia tries to explain this to her family, but they become upset with her for bringing trolls into the castle, which was against the rules. King Roland orders a guard to be placed outside the Grotto the following morning. That night, Sofia goes to see Gnarly to apologize, and Roland follows her. They both get trapped in a small cavern but are rescued by Gnarly and some of the other trolls.

In The Fliegel has Landed, Gnarlie, while playing hide and seek with Sofia and Teeny, bumps into Grotta, who takes his glowing cave crystal and tells him to get her more, threatening to turn him into a salamander if he doesn’t, or if he tells anyone. Gnarlie accidentally knocks over a bucket, which covers up the cave crystal, and Grotta gets scared. Once it is uncovered, Grotta denied being afraid of the dark. Gnarlie tries to mine for cave crystals with Sofia and Teeny, but they only find one. Sofia and Teeny follow him as he brings it to Grotta and hear Grotta’s minion, Flinch, tell Gnarlie that Grotta will not be understanding towards him. Grotta appears and tells Gnarlie that he needs to fill a bucket with cave crystals before her candle burns out, or he will be turned into a salamander. Sofia asks Cedric to conjure some cave crystals, but he is out of necessary ingredients for the spell. When Sofia, Teeny, and Cedric go with Gnarlie to confront Grotta, Cedric’s wand fails, resulting in him being turned into a salamander. Teeny mentions the Ceiling Stars (hundreds of cave crystals decorations the ceiling of the Trolls’ Grotto that look like stars) and Grotta tells Gnarlie to bring her those. Gnarlie cannot bring himself to do this, and Sofia, after consulting her mother, says he needs to stand up to Grotta. Grotta’s candle burns out, and she goes to Gnarlie, but Sofia defends him, resulting in Grotta capturing her. Grotta says that Sofia will be released if Gnarlie brings the Ceiling Stars. Gnarlie instead goes to Chief Gnuckles, and with some other trolls, confronts Grotta. Leveraging Grotta’s fear of the dark, they eventually subdue her.
