Sofia the First Wiki

"A Royal Mess" is the fifth episode of Sofia the First. It premiered on February 8, 2013.

Overview[]

Sofia, Amber, and James learn the importance of telling the truth when they try to hide the fact that James accidentally broke the family's stained-glass window while playing ball in the castle, which was against the rules.

Plot[]

The Goldenwing Circus comes to the Kingdom of Enchancia and the children really want to go, especially Sofia, since she's never been to the circus before. Everyone tells Sofia how great it is through a lively song and dance. Meanwhile, inside the castle, Roland is happy about how the stained glass picture of the Royal Family of Enchancia has turned out and can't wait to show it to his wife. The children run up to him and ask if they can go to the circus which he agrees and asks Baileywick to organize tickets for the show. Afterward, James starts juggling as he tells Sofia about the circus jugglers while the song and dance resumed. When the song was over, Roland reminded James that playing ball inside the castle is against the rules because there are too many things that might break, like the new stained-glass window.

When Roland leaves to get Miranda to show her the mirror, James starts juggling again, even though his sisters protest. Inevitably, one of the balls goes out of control and breaks the window, just as Roland had predicted. The three royal children are terrified by this. Sofia suggests they tell their father what happened, and she and Amber start to walk away. But James stops them, saying they can't tell him and fears that if Roland finds out he broke the rule, he'll get punished and won't be allowed to go to the circus.

However, Amber points out that it doesn't matter whether they tell him and explains that Roland is gonna see the window when he and Miranda come back. So, James comes up with a plan to hide the broken part of the window with a suit of armor. Sofia is skeptical about this, but after some begging from James, she agrees to help him.

While pushing the armor toward the window, they hear their parents approaching, and Amber quickly distracts them. Afterward, Sofia and James finish moving the armor in front of the window with the broken part, but James accidentally knocks over the axe the armor is holding, and it hits the window, damaging it even further. James says, "Uh-oh! That wasn't part of the plan!"

Meanwhile, Amber plays the harp for her parents, and the song she plays is so long that Roland falls asleep out of sheer boredom. When she finishes, they try to get up and leave after she offers to play another, but she stops them and takes them to see her new tiara.

Sofia thinks it's time to tell their father what happened, but James is determined not to miss the circus, even after Sofia tells him why none of his ideas for hiding the window will work. Sofia suggests that Cedric could repair the window with magic. At first, Cedric doesn't want to help, but when Sofia's amulet catches his eye, he changes his mind. After ushering Sofia and James out, he finishes up a new potion that will not fix the window, but allows him to pull small objects, with Sofia's amulet being his target, into his grasp, though in the case of large objects like a bookcase, he is pulled towards the object instead. Cedric meets up with Sofia and James and instructs them to stand in front of the window to Sofia's confusion. He casts the spell, but Sofia and James duck out of the way so his spell hits the window instead and Cedric is pulled into it. While Sofia frets over their worsening problem, Amber is showing her different tiaras to their parents. Roland, in particular, is getting restless, and he and his wife get up and leave. Amber chases them, and this time, she is now unable to stall them since they now decline her distractions.

Sofia, once again, instructs him to go tell their dad what happened, but James chooses to repair the window with magic. Sofia is against the strategy, but James chants the spell anyway, causing her to cover her eyes and moan "I can't look!" James successfully casts a spell that frees Cedric from the window and fix it as well, but the magic used on the window is so strong and unstable that it causes the entire window to shatter. At that moment, Roland and Miranda arrive, and Roland is shocked at the destroyed window. Cedric, who heads back to his lair, nervously says "Oh, it wasn't me your majesty. It was the children!" Miranda, confused, wants to know what is going on, and Roland explains that he had the stained glass window made for her, to which Miranda sadly states how sweet it was of him to do that for her. James, now accepting that he has to confess after all and miss the circus, is about to tell his parents it was his fault. However, just as James is about to do so, Sofia suddenly steps forward and says she did it, to everyone's shock. Therefore, Sofia is told to stay home from seeing the Goldenwing Circus and is escorted to her room by Baileywick while her family goes to see the circus.

James, who can't understand why Sofia would willingly throw away her own chance to see the circus by taking the blame for him, goes after her and asks why she covered for him. Sofia tells him it is because she knows how much he loves the circus and wanted to make sure he got to go see it, even if it meant giving up her own chance to see it. A guilt-ridden James joins his family in the coach and they head to the circus. While setting the table for tea in her room, Baileywick tells Sofia that he knows that James was the one who really broke the window and that she took the blame for him, because he knows she would never play ball in the castle after her father said not to and James would. He also tells Sofia that taking the blame for James was very kind of her, but she still shouldn't have done it, because taking the blame for something you didn’t do is still lying and lying, even if it is to help someone stay out of trouble, is still wrong.

At the circus, James feels guilty for letting Sofia take the blame, and not even the enjoyment of the Circus can ease his conscience. Finally, James tells his parents that he was the one who really broke the window and Sofia took the blame so he could go to the circus, and Amber explains that she was trying to keep them from seeing the window while it was damaged. Very disappointed with this revelation, Roland and Miranda take the twins home, to the Ringmaster's concern when he notices their departure.

After returning home, Roland and Miranda express disappointment in their children. James is scolded for breaking a castle rule by playing ball in the castle after his father said no to, Amber is scolded for trying to keep them from seeing the damaged window, and Sofia is scolded for taking the blame for what James did to the window. Miranda then explains that families need to avoid secrecy, especially when things go wrong, as it only makes problems worse. With this, the children have learned their lesson.

Just then, the castle receives a visit from the Ringmaster of the Goldenwing Circus. Thinking the family left early because they disliked the show, the Ringmaster is visibly relieved when Roland and Miranda assure him they love the circus—and that their children do too. They explain they simply had a family matter to attend to.

Eased that everything is alright, the Ringmaster offers to put on a private show for the Royal Family on the castle grounds. In the end, the entire family gets to enjoy the circus, and the circus magicians even repair the broken window.

  • Miranda mentions having celebrated Amber and James's birthday prior this episode. This birthday would be celebrated again in "Two Princesses and a Baby".
  • This is the third example of Sofia's amulet almost being stolen by Cedric, following "The Big Sleepover" and "Cedric's Apprentice".
    • If Cedric succeeded at magnetizing the amulet into his grasp, this would have swapped on the amulet's safety which curses him.
    • As Sofia is telling Cedric her problem, her amulet flashes briefly as a warning that she is in danger of it being stolen and as an alert for Cedric to not steal it.
